Sign #1: Visible Dust Blowing from Vents
This is the most obvious sign. When your HVAC system turns on, do you see a puff of dust from the supply vents? In a clean system, air flows without visible particulate matter. If you can see dust blowing, your ducts are overdue for cleaning.
Sign #2: Musty or Stale Smell from Vents
